History[]
Shaw's[]
Shaw's started as George C. Shaw in 1862 by George Shaw as a tea shop. Meanwhile, Maynard Davis founded Brockton Public Market. In 1919, Davis purchased George C. Shaw. As Shaw and BPM grew, it was decided that they needed a grocery warehouse. A warehouse in Brockton was purchased in 1961. Shaw expanded in the 60s. In 1978, BPM stores in Massachusetts changed there name to Shaw's Supermarkets. In 1983, J Sainsbury purchased 21% percent in Shaw's, purchasing the rest in 1987. Later, J Sainsbury acquired Iandoli's, Cerretani's, and Star Market. Star Market was the largest to join Shaw's. In 1999, Shaw's closed the distribution centers. In 2004, J Sainsbury sold Shaw's to Albertsons. Two years later, in 2006, SuperValu purchased Albertsons, which included Acme and Jewel-Osco. Soon, many stores were closed. Now, Shaw's has 169 stores.
Star Market[]
Star Market was originally part of The Jewel Companies. Jewel started branding stores as Star-Osco, since it owned Osco Drug. After Jewel was acquired by American Stores, Star-Osco stores became Star Market again. Albertsons purchased American Stores in 1999. Star Market was sold, but returned when Albertsons bought Shaw's.
